Egyptian dispatch: Jan. 7 - 8, 2013

One of the dwindling number of tents in the encampment at the Presidential Palace. I'm assuming this xmas tree means that there are some Copts amongst the campers as this is the day Copts celebrate Christmas.
Muslim Brotherhood chairman.
These stencils with '26-1' have just popped up all around the streets of the Presidential Palace. The date, January 26th is the day when the courts in Port Said will announce the verdicts on the people indicted in the murder of 75 rival soccer fans from the Cairo club Al Ahly. Fans of this club are called 'ultras' and they've played an important part in the uprising against the old regime. This day also comes just after the second anniversary of the uprising on January, 25th.
Since our apartment is across the street from the Presidential Palace, and in response to the clashes that took place at the end of last year, the army installed barbed wire through the garden and the side street to the neighboring building in order to secure the area from the street. Usually when we want to leave we have to go out through the established security checkpoints, however we met a maid from the building above, and she showed us a short-cut through the barbed wire fence. It's hard to see in the photo. You have to be careful, but it saves us time!
