Egyptian dispatch: Jan. 5, 2013

Every first Saturday of the month there's a cultural festival in Abdeen square in Cairo. The evening we went there were two cartoonists displaying their works, as well as a photographer who has been covering events in the square. In another part of the square two artists were collaborating on creating a political cartoon over the space of an hour or so. Since this was the beginning of the year this festival was dedicated to those who had died during the uprising. The sheik above delivered an introduction and then black balloons were released into the evening air. Over 800 people have died and the killers go free. I was very moved by it all. Very real sacrifices have been made in this uprising.

Every revolution needs its food vendors.
