Egyptian dispatch: Jan. 13, 2013

Last night (Saturday) we heard a lot of noise and what sounded like gunshots, coming from the anti-Morsi encampment down the street. We went out to have a look, but were dissuaded from getting too close. It turns out that 2 mini-bus loads of people had attacked the campers, fired guns in the air, injured a number of campers and burnt down at least one tent. 15 were wounded including 9 security force personnel. All the press coverage is being very cautious about naming who the attackers were, but it's clear that it was the Brothers.

This morning we passed the camp on our way to do our shopping. A TV crew was interviewing one of the injured, and further up the street were the remains of a tent. The encampment, across the street from the Presidential Palace, was started on Dec., 4th by anti-Morsi activists who are demonstrating to annul the Islamist influenced constitution.

After two weeks in Egypt I returned to the USA on January 15th.
